St Helena’s role in the expansion of British power and global trading links from the 17th to 20th centuries is represented not only in its terrestrial remains; it has also an important submerged maritime heritage including numerous wrecks. Examples include the SS Papanui, a passenger cargo vessel that caught fire while in the South Atlantic in 1911. While the ship’s passengers were rescued and landed on St Helena, the fire could not be controlled and the ship was run aground in James Bay, abandoned and left to burn out and sink. The steering gear remains visible above the waters of James Bay and the outline of her hull can be clearly seen on a calm day from the cliffs above Jamestown, where she is regularly explored by snorkelers and divers. Other examples include the Spangereid, RFA Darkdale and SS City of Cairo, details of which can be read here.
